A hospital patch of grass in Kent has been transformed into a peaceful, accessible space for patients and NHS colleagues to enjoy, thanks in part to funding from the Mears Foundation.
The grant came as a direct result of a nomination by a local Mears colleague, and the project was delivered by a dedicated team of volunteers, Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust (KCHFT) staff and local partners to bring the community’s vision for the garden to life.
Colourful plants have revitalised the previously under-utilised space, with accessible pathways correcting uneven ground. Seating areas and quiet spaces for reflection were designed with wellbeing in-mind, creating a calm environment for anyone who would like to spend some time outdoors.
Sustainability was also an important consideration of the project, with raised planters made from recycled materials and natural materials used wherever possible throughout the design.

“Outdoor spaces can make a real difference to how people feel. The Queens’ Garden provides a welcoming place where patients, visitors and colleagues can pause, reflect and recharge. It is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when colleagues, volunteers and local partners work together. I would like to thank everyone who has helped bring this fantastic space to life.”

Since opening earlier this year, the garden has received fantastic feedback with visitors complimenting the workmanship, beauty and peacefulness.
This is just one of the many inspiring projects delivered with the support of the Mears Foundation, the charitable arm of Mears Group which funds projects across the UK that play a vital role in building stronger communities and helping people access new opportunities.
