The Mears Foundation and The Jason Robinson Foundation: Creating Opportunity Through Sport
The Mears Foundation is proud to partner with The Jason Robinson Foundation, a charity founded by former professional rugby league and union player Jason Robinson OBE, to help create life-changing sports opportunities for children and young people.
Through this partnership, schools across Yorkshire will benefit from expert-led sports programmes designed to inspire every child, no matter their sporting ability. By supporting access to new activities, coaching and starter equipment, the Mears Foundation is helping more young people experience the physical, social and emotional benefits of sport.
The difference we have made with The Jason Robinson Foundation
The Jason Robinson Foundation is already reaching more than 50 schools across Yorkshire, using sport as a way to build confidence, encourage teamwork and support children’s physical health and mental wellbeing.
With funding from the Mears Foundation, this impact will be extended through the introduction of golf programmes in partner schools. For many children, this will be their first opportunity to try golf, access specialist coaching and take part in a sport they may not usually get to experience.
- Give children access to new sports and experiences.
- Support physical health and mental wellbeing through active participation.
- Encourage teamwork, confidence and shared achievement.
- Provide starter golf equipment for partner schools.
- Enable expert coaches to deliver engaging sessions for young people.
- Create opportunities for children of all abilities to take part and feel included.
Why sport matters
Sport has the power to bring people together, build confidence and open doors to new opportunities. For children and young people, taking part in sport is not only about physical activity; it is also about belonging, resilience, teamwork and discovering what they are capable of.
The Jason Robinson Foundation’s programmes are shaped around each school’s needs, helping to create a positive environment where children can get active, try something new and develop important life skills through shared achievement.
By working together, the Mears Foundation and The Jason Robinson Foundation are helping to remove barriers and give more children the chance to take part, regardless of their background, experience or sporting ability.
Introducing golf into schools
As part of the partnership, funding from the Mears Foundation will support the introduction of golf programmes in partner schools across Yorkshire.
Golf may not be the first sport many children get the chance to try, which is exactly why this programme is so important. It gives young people the opportunity to experience something different, learn new skills and discover a sport that could spark confidence, enjoyment and ambition.
Jason Robinson OBE explained:
“Some people may ask why golf? To that I’d say, why not? It’s about giving children the opportunity to try new things that they may not usually get to experience.
“Although my own journey started through rugby, we are all different and you never know where an opportunity like this could lead.”
Direct Impact
The partnership will help The Jason Robinson Foundation widen its reach and continue delivering meaningful sports programmes in schools.
Funds from the Mears Foundation will be used to purchase starter equipment and support expert coaching, helping more children take part in high-quality sessions that encourage movement, confidence and teamwork.
Each programme is designed around the needs of the school, with a focus on helping children feel included, supported and motivated. Whether a child is already passionate about sport or trying something new for the first time, the aim is to create a positive experience that can have a lasting impact.
A shared commitment
The Mears Foundation supports community-led projects that improve wellbeing, inclusion and opportunity across the UK. This partnership reflects that commitment by helping children access new experiences that support their development both inside and outside the classroom.
Heather Tyrer, General Manager of the Mears Foundation, said:
“The JRF share our commitment to giving children the opportunity to get outside, start to work as a team and engage in a sport they may not have tried before.
“I’m really pleased to announce this partnership and look forward to the positive impact that we can make together.”
Jason Robinson OBE, Founder of The Jason Robinson Foundation, said:
“Each of our programmes are shaped around the school’s needs, with a focus on supporting children’s physical health and mental wellbeing, by encouraging teamwork through the power of shared achievement.
“Partners like The Mears Foundation are helping us to make an impact to as many schools, and change as many children’s lives, as possible.”
