Supporting Cole Green House

The Mears Foundation has helped combat social isolation and loneliness at Cole Green House

One of the aims of the Foundation this year is to ‘combat social isolation and loneliness’ and this is exactly why Karen Johnson, Commercial Manager at Mears, applied for a Mears Foundation Grant, to help residents at Cole Green House by constructing a new patio area on their grounds so residents could socialise externally by having an outside space where they can meet with family and friends and become part of their community again.

The recent global pandemic has accentuated even more the differences between the community in terms of housing and lockdown has been tough for everyone but what’s it like if you have limited space at home or no outside space at all?

Having a private garden has helped the residents of these 31 flats to improve their mental wellbeing as they now can enjoy some time outside when friends, family or their careers come to visit.

Fiona Plumridge, Community Engagement Officer Welwyn Hatfield Borough commented -

The patio at Cole Green house will make such a difference to our residents, especially those who are less mobile. Previously they were unable to make use of the communal garden as the ground was uneven - now they not only have somewhere they can sit out in the nice weather, but the fence around it also gives them added security. We couldn’t believe how quickly work began after our meeting with Scott and the contractors – now we can’t wait for the summer to see everyone enjoying it!

Contractor Declan Smart, Smartier Group Ltd, also said:

“It was a pleasure to be part of the project, yourself and the management made it very easy to work on. Any help I needed, you provided instantly. I would like to thank you for the opportunity to get involved with such a great project and happy to be part of any future projects. It has been a privilege to give back to the community I grew up in”.
