Stay Safe in the Sizzling Heatwave..

It's that time of year again when the mass summer holiday exodus begins.
As we experience more extreme temperatures please keep an eye on your older neighbours to make sure they are happy, healthy and have everything they need during a heatwave.

Keep cool, stay safe

Follow some of these tips for older people and your families to make sure you keep cool and stay safe during a heatwave.

· Stay hydrated by drinking cool drinks such as water or soft drinks. Try to avoid hot drinks such as tea or coffee.

· Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, which is typically between 11am and 3pm.
· Keep cool by splashing yourself with water throughout the day, or even have a cold bath or shower.
· Make rooms in the house as cool as possible by closing blinds and curtains to keep the sun out and only open windows when it is cool enough outside to do so.
· Find the coolest room in the house and spend time there if you need to.
· Keep an eye on weather forecasts for what the temperature will be and make plans accordingly

Happy holidays from the MF team.

The Eggcelent Easter Raffle Winner

Well done to our Easter raffle winners!

David Waddle won the lovely scrumptious Easter box and was delighted to share the contents with his family.

David is an avid MF supporter and has attended several family fun days in Scotland and in England, and also took part in Project South Africa 2015.

Well done everyone and thank you for your cracking support.

The heart of the Easter message is giving to others....

In an age of austerity, it's more important than ever to volunteer.

Easter, is a time when we should think about the ways that we can help the less fortunate. There is plenty for us to do.

We can volunteer to do charity work and give generously to worthy organisations. But all of us can easily become too distracted by the detail of our own lives and forget about the extraordinary problems facing other people.

It could  be something as simple yet priceless as picking up the telephone and speaking to someone who has not spoken to anyone else for a very long time.

We wish you and your loved ones a blessed and peaceful Easter holiday.

Congratulations to our lucky Easter raffle winners!

Our hearty congratulations to our prize winners…

Dee Brownjohn - The Ostrich Egg by Hotel Chocolat - Brighton Branch

David Waddell  - The Family Easter Box - North Lanarkshire Branch

Thank you so much to everyone who took part in our Easter raffle. Your support is vitally important and greatly appreciated.

Care Bears Caring, Sharing and Giving

At the start of Diane Keay’s  (Trustee/ Customer & Community Manager Rotherham)  career with Mears, she was made aware of the knitted bears which residents were encouraged to make at either community groups or in their own time; these bears were then distributed around the UK and beyond to children in need.  These bears were in most cases, the only possession these children have.

Diane encouraged residents to join with knitters from around the country, she also asked her mother-in-law to knit a couple of bears for her to take around to local groups.

Since this request in December 2012,  Jean Keane  has not stopped knitting! Along with her friend, Glenda and Diane’s mum, Jean,Audrey has produced over 500 bears which have been distributed in accordance with the Mears guideline, predominantly to South Africa.

A big thank you to Diane and her dedicated network of knitters!

Lewis Laws London Marathon 2019 !!

While some of us were over indulging over Christmas and have plans to do it all again this Easter, please remember new Gas and M&E manager for Tower Hamlets, Lewis Laws, has been doing without! Lewis has been eating clean and running up to 14 miles as part of his gruelling training regime for the upcoming London Marathon on behalf of the Mears Foundation.

What motivates you to run the London Marathon?

I feel like it would be an achievement, a true test of Mind and Body to run the marathon. I’ve done the marathon 2 years ago and unfortunately suffered an injury during the run, so I did not get the time I was aiming for, I hope to beat that time this year.

I believe in the work the Mears Foundation do; by supporting less known charities and schemes, they make their goals more achievable.

What have you done to prep?

I have been running at least 3 times a week. Trying to increase the mileage every run, mainly the weekends. I’ve even run from work to home which is usually 11 miles.

I have had to invest in new footwear for the training and the actual marathon, and the Mears Rewards scheme landed me a great deal on Nike town!

Have you got a time in mind?

I want to be able to complete the marathon in 4 hours 15 mins, although I know this will be difficult I’m going to set that as my personal goal.

If you want to support Lewis’s efforts and the Mears Foundation on the link below. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/lewis-laws

Good luck Lewis, we appreciate your support.

Happy New Year !

We hope you all had a good break and are looking forward to an exciting New Year ahead with tons of energy and optimism!

It’s the time to be thankful for the blessings of the past year and to take stock of all your achievements.

The New Year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. If we can help a charity/project which will benefit the community or provide practical help and support to vulnerable people we may be able to help write that story.

All you have to do is submit a grant proposal to the Mears Foundation. The trustees will look at the criteria and then make a decision.

There are greater things to be achieved in every New Year and each and everyone has a part in reaching their goal.

Happy New Year!
